Kongshan Temple officially closed escrow in early May 2024, followed immediately by its first cleaning Dharma Assembly. Over a hundred lay practitioners attended that day, including students from New York State and many who traveled great distances from other states, all gathering to witness and participate in this historic moment.
The name "Kongshan Temple" was personally bestowed by the Teacher. It was inspired by the poem Mountain Dwelling in Autumn Dusk by Wang Wei, specifically the line: "After fresh rain in the empty mountain, the weather turns autumnal in the evening." This evokes a sense of ease, tranquility, and detachment from worldly strife. Although such a serene image perfectly matches the local scenery, the Teacher’s primary intention was to encourage disciples to practice and study here, ultimately realizing Emptiness.
The Venerables recalled that, initially, Kongshan Temple truly lived up to its name—it was literally empty. The main hall held nothing but a single table. However, on the day of the cleaning assembly, a simple yet solemn Mandala/Altar was already visible, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the New York lay practitioners in its arrangement. With the generous support of benefactors from all sectors, the necessary supplies and resources for the temple are gradually falling into place.
May Kongshan Temple fulfill the Teacher's expectations and allow the Dharma Wheel of Emptiness to be turned and spread throughout the ten directions.
